Surface/curve continuity

  • Positional continuity (C0)
    • End positions of curves/surfaces are connected
  • Tangential continuity (C1)
    • C0 + the first derivative of the curve/surface is continuous (smooth). No sharp edges. Often sufficient
  • Curvature continuity (C2) / class A surfaces
    • C1 + the second derivative (curvature) of the curve/surface is continuous ("perfectly smooth"). Two curves/surfaces appears as one
    • Class A surfaces are often considered as a "must" in - for example the automotive industry where reflection of light in surfaces must often be accurately controlled. "Zebra striping" the surface or proper rendering can reveal C2
