NURBS - a brief intro
Non-uniform rational B-spline. A boundary representation of the solid/volume
- A NURBS curve is defined by its order, a set of weighted control points, and a knot vector
- The shape is given by the weighted position of the control points
- Local control: A single control point only influences those intervals where it is active
- They offer one common mathematical form for both standard algebraic shapes and freeform organic shapes
- Accurate positioning/control - well suited for engineering design with high tolerances
- Provides surface control
- Not very easy to model complex organic shapes
- Many operations such as fillet/shell/boolean can be difficult
